Catholic Organization for Relief & Development Aid
Based in: Netherlands
Year established: 1914
Cordaid (Catholic Organization for Relief & Development Aid) is one of the largest development organizations in the Netherlands and has a network of 890 partner organizations in 28 countries in Africa, Asia, the Middle East and Latin America.
Since Cordaid’s inception in 1999, Cordaid has been protecting vulnerable human beings for almost 100 years, wherever poverty, injustice and violence have struck the hardest globally.
Cordaid has ten main focus areas in combating global challenges; healthcare, disaster response, entrepreneurship, women’s leadership, child and education, extractives, food security, security and justice, urban matters and investments.
Cordaid has a very strong presence in Ethiopia, specifically focusing on healthcare, disaster response, child and education, urban matters and investments. Cordaid concentrates on strengthening the position of marginalized groups in Ethiopia: Pastoralists in de dry-lands, more especially the most vulnerable and at risk, people living with HIV AIDS and slum dwellers in Addis Abeba.
Cordaid works mainly in the south of Ethiopia, where the communities themselves are the focus. By giving them the chance to identify their own problems and make their own action plans, Cordaid stimulates the growth of thriving communities. The role of Cordaid is to work together with other relevant stakeholders such as government, businesses and civil society organizations. Cordaid ensures that the voice of local communities is heard nationally and internationally, so policies better respond to the reality of their lives.
